Being a first time mom is probably the most challenging transition a woman goes through in life. Life as you know it changes completely and all of a sudden you are responsible for this adorable and innocent little human being. During the chaos of what is now your new life the last thing you need is to be missing something that the baby happens to need that exact second. Believe me, no one can bare to listen to a crying baby for more than a few minutes.
Below I have a list of newborn must haves that will come to make your life A LOT easier. These are products you are actually going to use and that I highly recommend for all mommies who have, or are about to have, a baby. It includes things you’ll need on hand at all times, and things you’ll need to make life just a little less complicated.
It’s necessary for all newborns to sleep close to their mother for quite a few months until they are old enough to sleep in their own room. They need constant care and supervision, even throughout the night, which is why a bassinet is on everyone’s “must-haves” list. The Halo in particular is a popular product because of its useful features such as:
- 360 degree swivel
- height adjustment
- baby is easily accessible
- you can see the baby through the mesh
- conveniently stands right next to your bed
Here’s a quick YouTube video demonstrating its features.
I love it even more because the dock-a-tot fits exactly into the bassinet, which brings me to my next must have.
P.S. The Halo does not come with a mattress pad so if you are planning to purchase the dock-a-tot then you won’t need this for a few months but if are not then be sure to buy it with the bassinet. You also need mattress pad covers and since the bassinet has a unique hourglass shape the sheets are only offered by the brand; they have muslin covers and cotton covers. They aren’t the best quality but its the only option out there unfortunately. If I had to choose between the two I would choose the muslin covers.
The dock-a-tot was originally created for adults to safely co-sleep with their babies, since it’s obviously unsafe to sleep with a newborn between you and your partner.
It’s however so much more than that. It’s like a compact little bed made to fit snug like the womb so that newborns can sleep peacefully, it’s breathable so if the infant sticks his face on the sides he’ll be okay, and it is also the perfect travel item. I love that I can take the dock-a-tot anywhere. If I was upstairs I would keep it in his Halo, and if I was downstairs I would put it on the couch. I could have also taken it to my mom’s house or even to a hotel with me. In all honesty though, the best part of this really is that it’s a safe way to co-sleep with the baby. My husbands and my favorite thing to do was to put this between us and just stare at him and smell him all night- the side cushions are firm enough so you can’t roll on top of it. Now that Levon is 9 months old I keep it on the floor in his room and he loves climbing all over it.
I personally never gave my son a pacifier throughout the day unless he was really fussy, which was rare. I only gave it to him when it was sleep time so he can associate a paci with bedtime. His favorite were these Philips Avent ones.
This is my favorite baby monitor! I’ve gone through a few and this one is the best I’ve used.
Another necessity- a bath tub. I have had my fair share of struggles when it comes to tubs. I bought all the fancy ones and ended up returning them because they were just uncomfortable. This was the best one I found and it was the cheapest! It’s only $25 and I used it until he was about 6 or 7 months old. It’s the perfect size for a newborn and if you unhook the end of that yellow part then it becomes perfect for an infant. I loved it even more with a cushion when he was a newbie.
Also, since you’ll be on your knees and elbows the whole time you NEED, like neeeeeeedddddd, a kneeler and an elbow rest. I cannot bathe him without this stuff I swear it is a life saver. You’ll also need a rinser, this is my favorite.
Mustela is my favorite baby brand on the market and their newborn shampoo is the best. I still use their Cleansing Gel on Levon, it is the only body wash I have tried that removes all the crap on his skin (oil, sunscreen, rash cream, etc) while still being gentle.
Fun fact: I used to use this on my face and chest when I was breastfeeding so I didn’t expose myself to any harmful chemicals. Worked amazing!
Hooded towels are the best when it comes to babies of any age. I still use mine on Levon. Just make sure they are 100% cotton.
This was the pump I rented when Levon was born. I knew I was going to breastfeed for as long as I possibly could (read all about my experience here) so I rented it from the hospital and my hospital gave me a free starter kit so I didn’t have to purchase anything. I wouldn’t recommend buying it because it’s over $1,000 and it’s way more economical to rent it out. I also used these little baggies to store my milk and these nursing pads to keep from leaking. Oh, and this was the best nipple cream on the market.
This is the only bottle I still use today. It is the only glass bottle I have found, it is perfect for newborns because it reduces colic and gas, and it also comes with a silicone sleeve so if you drop it it doesn’t break! This is the only bottle I recommend for newborns, once they become a little older you can use the Como Tomo bottle. These two are all I used, and still use, I never bought any other bottles.
All babies have a little bit of gas no matter what you do to prevent it. This was the only product on the market that actually helped him. It is also the only product that isn’t absorbed in your body so you can use it as many times as you’d like. It esentially breaks up the babies gas bubbles and helps them fart it out.
Okay you guys please listen to me when I say you will not be dressing your newborn up everyday. One, most days you are going to be inside of the house. Two, you are going to be so exhausted that the last thing you will care about is an outfit. Three, these are the most comfortable clothes for babies so just don’t bother, at least not when they are just a few months old. Four, cute outfits don’t fit them the way you’d expect so just wait to purchase them until they are at least 2.5 or 3 months old (unless you have a photoshoot or event). Oh and, you will get so many cute outfits as gifts from friends and family so just don’t waste your money on the cute stuff just yet. You’ll really only need long sleeve bodysuits and short sleeve.
Sleep and Play’s are head to toe bodysuits that cover the toes and even the hands. That way you don’t have to put mittens on them (trust me they are annoying, they always come off). I love the zipper ones from Carter’s because they are so easy, Target also has a bunch of cute ones.
These were literally the best hats everrrrrr! So lightweight and easily absorbable. I would put it on him after bath time and it would soak up all the water from his hair, then I’d switch out for a new one and have him sleep with that. This is also the only hat that actually fit him up until now, can you believe it. It’s the only hat I really used. All the other cute ones fit him for a few short weeks then he’d outgrow it. My advice would be to just take as many as you can from the hospital because I promise you this will be one of your most used items. If you need something that keeps the baby warm, then this is my fav.
These are the best clothes for swaddling, covering, and pretty much doing anything for the baby. They are 100% cotton, lightweight, and another one of your necessities. The ones from Target are great too! If you want something thicker to keep the baby warm then these are my favorite. Oh, and if you want something cuter to use outside of the house this cashmere blanket was my ride-or-die since Levon was born in the Winter (I still use it).
You’ll need to burp the baby after every feeding and sometimes they’ll throw up so these burping cloths are great for that. They are 100% cotton and they have a curve that lays perfectly on your shoulder. Also, don’t worry about buying bibs because you won’t use it for a few months. Instead buy these clothes to wipe their mouthes.
This detergent removes tough throw up stains, breastmilk stains, and food stains. It is also hypoallergenic, which is always a plus. If there is a stubborn stain that this doesn’t remove then I would use Baby Oxiclean, this stuff removes EVERYTHING!
This was my absolute favorite diaper. Diapers are another trial-and-error kind of product but I find that these are the best for newborns. Don’t buy more than one large pack because they outgrow the newborn size pretty soon. Also, these were my favorite newborn wipes.
When it comes to rash cream I highly suggest buying a smaller size of this Triple paste and trying it out. I personally like it but I don’t love it. I’ve used an entire jar of it but I’m always trying new baby products to find the best ones. So in complete honesty, this isn’t the best one but it does get the job done. Apply a generous amount!
Newborns have the best skin don’t they? It is our job to keep it that way. Sometimes they can get dry skin and this was the best product for that. I liked to warm it up with my hands then apply it all over my sons body. It kept him moisturized for hours!
Love these q-tips because they make sure you don’t go too far into the ear. I’ve tried the generic brands and nothing compares to the quality of this one.
This was the best little kit I ever bought. It included some core essentials I used and still use every day.
This is an alcohol & fragrance free hand sanitizer I always had on my changing table. Sometimes I needed to quickly change his diaper because he was crying and didn’t have time to wash my hands so I would use this. I would also use it if I had washed my hands just for extra protection. I was kind of an anal and paranoid first time mom lol.
This is the best baby creation ever you guys. It makes cleaning the baby’s nose so easy, clean, and simple. Kind of weird when you first try it, because you have to suction with your mouth, but I promise you it eventually feels normal. This is a must to have around the house just in case baby gets a stuffy nose.
This is the stroller I decided to go with because it was cute and convenient. The wheels on this thing are so easy to ride but kind of annoying to store- they’re really big. However, the biggest upside is that the car seat can go from the car base onto the stroller base so it’s really easy to take a newborn everywhere with this stroller. I also love that the car seat reclines, no other carseat on the market does that. I was completely sold on the safety of it too, it has these metal things that you pull out from the side and god forbid you’re in an accident those rods take most of the impact. Amazing right?!
I have a two-story house so I needed to purchase something that I could use downstairs as well. Something that didn’t take up a lot of space but was still useful. I bought this from BuyBuy Baby and it was seriously the best investment ever- I still use it today! I love products that grow with the baby because then you can really get your moneys worth, and this product does that.
- Comes with a changing station and seater- total 3 products for the price of one!
- Travel friendly
- Easy to clean
- Has side pockets for necessities you need to keep on hand
- Soft enough for the baby to sleep in
- Doubles as a play pen for later
- When the baby outgrows the changing station and seater, it’s going to be annoying to store those 2 items somewhere.
- Yes, that is the only con LOL!
At about one month old I started introducing Levon to playmats because they were engaging and would keep him occupied. He loved this thing for months because it was colorful, it had toys, and it came with a tummy time pillow which I used all the time. He still plays with the toys today, I just removed them from their hanging slots.
I wanted to include this in the travel section because it’s perfect for travel. It’s small, doesn’t weigh much, and it’s perfect for babies. Best part? Comes with a little section where you can put your phone and take pictures and videos all day.
That’s it for my newborn necessities guide mamas. I only included items you WILL use with your newborn baby and most of these are items they will use until they are infants!
What they won’t need or use are things like…
- Wipe warmers- tossed mine out
- Those Mamaroo seaters that vibrate and move- useless, you get a seater with the Pack & Play
- Expensive strollers- inconvenient
- Mittens- don’t need them with zipper sleep & play
- Bottle warmers- your baby doesn’t need to drink warm milk lol they can drink regular temp milk
Here’s a little list breakdown just in case you’re getting anything in-store. Save it, pin it, share it… whatever works!
